Oregon ACS CAN "In Memory of Marilyn Wong"

2024 Lights of Hope

Marilyn Wong was an advocate for the American Cancer Society for more than 28 years. She died on May 31, 2024, battling cancer. She was a pharmacist at Fred Meyers, in The Dalles where she lived her whole life.

Marilyn started with the American Cancer Society, the Relay for Life, in Hood River, Oregon in 1997. After 4 years she was asked to if she wanted to start a Relay for Life in The Dalles, which she did wholeheartedly.

Marilyn has been involved with the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN) since its beginning in 2001. She was a state representative for ACS CAN and looked forward to her mission moment at every meeting. In 2006, she went to Washington DC where she and fellow advocates asked Congress for more funding for cancer research. Which they got 😁

Marilyn knew firsthand about cancer as she battled first breast cancer and then a rare blood cancer that finally took her life. She was adamant about letting the representatives of our state know that they should help people stop smoking, educate about early detection and do more in the fight against cancer.  She spent every legislative session asking for more tobacco taxes, more programs help people to stop smoking, advocating for research and services for cancer patients until the day she left us.

It was Marilyn's wish that in lieu of flowers, donations should be made to the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN).  Please donate here to honor and remember Marilyn and your loved ones touched by cancer by participating in the 14th annual Lights of Hope!

The Lights of Hope event is ACS CAN’s signature fundraiser dedicated to honoring those who have been impacted by cancer and remembering those lost.
